Summers so back babyyyy!!! Longer days, warmer temperatures, and an abundance of fresh produce, which of course will naturally shift our energy, appetite, and routines.
Instead of forcing ourselves to maintain the same habits we've had all year, we can support our vitality by embracing the rhythms of the season.
So what should change in summer?
Hydration Becomes a Daily Priority:
Start the day with water or bone broth before coffee. Add electrolytes during especially hot days. Eat hydrating foods like watermelon, Other melons, cucumber, berries, squash, and chia/basil seeds.
I highly recommend having an emotional support water bottle nearby at all times, and maybe even a fun bag for it. I also LOVE to create fun bevys in summer. My go-to is this watermelon slushie I make by freezing half a watermelon (or any local in season melon), then blending some frozen, some fresh with coconut water, lime, and a dash of sea salt. Sometimes I even add a lemon-lime electrolyte power. It's SO refreshing!
Eat with the Season!!:
Summer naturally offers foods that help cool and hydrate the body. And of course, an abundance of farm fresh goodies. Seasonal foods are often fresher, more flavorful, and richer in nutrients because they’re harvested at their peak and don't travel far! And of course, farmers' markets are so fun and can encourage you to try something new.
Something to note: some foods can increase your photosensitivity! Meaning you'll burn easily. This can happen from certain fruits, vegetables, herbs, skincare products, or medications. So be cautious.
Shift Movement to Cooler Hours:
What feels nourishing in January may feel draining in July. Maybe less hot yoga and more sunset jogs or outdoor home workouts. Walk in the early morning, incorporate swimming, paddleboarding, hiking, or outdoor yoga. Also, listen to your body’s need for slower movement on especially hot days. Sometimes this heat can make us feel sluggish, and it's okay to rest.
Spend More Time Outdoors:
Summer offers an opportunity to reconnect with nature, specifically for those of us living in cooler climates. Screen time is a lot less appealing when it's not brutally cold outside anyway! Sip that morning coffee outside, maybe while barefoot grounding in the grass. Kickstart that digestion with evening walks after dinner. Reading in the park, garden, go to that farmers’ market!
Nature should become part of your wellness routine rather than an occasional activity. Embrace the lightness that comes with summer. Leaving space for spontaneity and go play outside!
